THE INTERVIEW:

Q: Why did you decide to begin your own business?

A: I am a mama to three kiddos and I absolutely LOVE that job. It is so fun and I am faced with different challenges and obstacles. Hank, Gus & Mae are my light and they always will be but I am quickly realizing that they will need me less and less to do the little things. There will be a day when Hank doesn't need me to help with his homework, Gus won't need me to help with his experiments and Mae won't need me to zip her jacket.

Starting Butterscotch Sewing seemed like the perfect way for me to be there to help them with the big and small stuff whenever they need that help but also have something outside of being their mama. What I didn't expect was how much of an interest they would take in all of this. They ask questions and celebrate wins and it has in some small way connected us even more.

Q: What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?

A: My nana has always told me not to listen to advice when it I don't ask for it. Now if you know my nana she is an incredibly tough cookie - probably a little too tough at times but I do follow this a little bit. There are always going to be people who tell you what they would do and sometimes it is really great to hear another person's perspective but it also can be a little dangerous. I feel like I have let unsolicited advice hold me back in the past - it's made me second guess my decisions so I always try to do my best to sift through the advice that is given freely and not hold myself to any of it too closely.

Q: What is the single most important factor to your business success?

A: Giving back is so incredibly important to me. I have been lucky to have people in my life who encourage and support me and being able pass that on to others is so important to me. When I started Butterscotch Sewing I knew that I wanted to have a philanthropic side to it. Right now I am donating $2 from every sewing kit sold to a rotating non-profit and I am working hard to make this a larger donation as my business grows.
